What is Neurofeedback?
Neurofeedback is an innovative therapeutic intervention that leverages real-time monitoring of brain activity to promote optimal brain function. This non-invasive technique offers a myriad of benefits, making it an increasingly popular choice for individuals seeking to improve mental health, cognitive performance, and overall well-being.
One of the primary benefits of neurofeedback is its ability to enhance mental health. It has shown significant promise in treating conditions such as anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and more. By training individuals to regulate their brainwaves, neurofeedback helps reduce the symptoms associated with these disorders. Neurofeedback fosters a state of peak mental performance, often referred to as being “in the green zone,” which is beneficial in high-stakes environments where optimal cognitive function is crucial.Another significant advantage of neurofeedback is its non-invasive nature. Unlike medication, which can come with a host of side effects, neurofeedback involves no pharmacological intervention. It is a safe, drug-free approach that works by harnessing the brain’s natural ability to self-regulate and heal.
The benefits of neurofeedback extend beyond individual therapy sessions. It promotes long-term changes in brain function, leading to sustained improvements in mental health and cognitive performance. The skills and self-regulation techniques learned during neurofeedback training can be applied in everyday life, providing individuals with tools to manage stress, improve focus, and maintain emotional balance.
Neurofeedback is used to treat individuals of all ages, from kids to seniors. Neurofeedback meets the American Psychological Association’s definition of an evidence based intervention for many issues.
How Neurofeedback Works
The brain is a highly complex organ made up of billions of cells called neurons. Neurons send and receive messages to and from all parts of your body. These messages are electrical impulses that create brain waves. The brain map (also called a neuro map) is an important tool we use to evaluate your brainwaves and identify opportunities to improve communication between various regions of the brain. The brain map is able to capture a window of brain activity, analyze the data, and create a visual representation for each lobe of the brain and each specific brain wave (Delta, Theta, Alpha, Beta).
A non-invasive cap placed on the scalp, then our software captures the electrical impulses in the brain. This method is known as an electroencephalogram (EEG). The results show brain wave patterns in different parts of the brain. The process takes about 15 minutes, and the data is then converted into a visual brain map report. We analyze the brain map report to identify any problem areas. This report will display the results in a clear and concise format that can be easily understood.
Patients then come back for 1-2 brain training sessions per week. While wearing the cap, the patient plays games that are controlled by their brainwaves. Through positive feedback when brain waves are firing correctly, the brain begins creating healthy habits over time. New reports are regularly generated to monitor progress.
